Filipinas want to Be White

marry-a-filipina-i

maIn this episode we address the Filipino obsession with white skin.  White skin is not just considered beautiful, it is about the only way you want be considered beautiful.  Dark skin is considered ugly by most Filipinos.  There are some exceptions, but not many.

US Marine Kills Transgender

US Marine Kills Transgender

October 2014, a group of Filipinos are protesting the presence of the U.S. military after the killing of filipino transgender Jennifer Laude by Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton of the 9th Marines, based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.  The victim Jennifer (formerly Jeffrey) Laude dressed as a woman and met Joseph in a bar.

The Marine was on shore leave in Olongapo City when he befriended two he thought were Filipino women at a disco bar called Ambyanz.

According to the the Philippine National Police investigation, they checked into the Celzone Lodge, a motel.  Laude asked the other woman, Barbie, to leave before Joseph could discover that they were both transgender.

When Celzone Lodge staff went to inspect and clean the room, Laude’s body was discovered slumped next to the toilet.  Joseph had already fled the scene.  Laude was drowned in the toilet.

The murder brings back memories of past abuses and crimes by US services members when the US had a larger presence in the Philippines in the 80’s, so some groups strongly believe the US should not have been invited back.  These groups see the murder of Jennifer Laude as evidence that America and its military should be thrown out immediately.

Joseph Scott Pemberton was given over to the Philippines government to be dealt with by the justice system.  Meanwhile, this situation has put a strain on Philippine-US relations at least on a social level.  Politically, there is a lot at stake.  The US is pushing to send more troops to the Philippines in light of China’s aggressive actions to attempt to bully and takeover of the entire China sea and all the islands therein.

Although some seek to get rid of the US, President Benigno Aquino III defended the military agreement and cooperation with the military by saying, a crime can happen anywhere and “the sin of one person” should not reflect on the entire country.

philippines tsunami

The Philippine archipelago teeters on the edge of the “Ring of Fire”.  The Ring of Fire is an area the frames almost the entire Pacific ocean the edge of which has a LOT of earthquakes and volcanic activity.  Even so you are more likely to see calamity from Typhoons than from tsunamis (they are two different things).

The major seismic activity that occur miles off the shore is what causes huge ocean water displacement.  The displaced sea moves to the shore in a HUGE wave that can cause total destruction.  Tsunami is a borrowed Japanese word – 津浪 (hiragana つなみ) which literally means Harbor Wave – “Tsu” – Harbor “nami” – Wave.

The sporadic occurrences of Philippine Tsunamis is documented going back to 1627 (see NOAA Tsunami database).  Although they do happen they don’t usually take a lot of lives.  The notable exception would be 1976 where a Tsunami hit Mindanao and killed over 4,000 people and destroyed thousands of homes.  There is also 1965 where 355 people were killed by a tsunami in Luzon Island and more recently 81 people died in the 1994.

Typhoon vs. Tsunami

philippines typhoonThe devastation of super storms like Haiyan are sometimes confused with tsunamis or the word “tsunami” is used as an adverb to describe the sheer magnitude of destruction and death of a typhoon.  However, there is a difference between the technical definition of a Typhoon and a tsunami.  Typhoon is storm sweeping in from the ocean on the land and a tsunami can come on clear calm day because its generated by a huge displacement of ocean that gets pushed on to the land (usually from an earthquake).  Also, the death toll of a tsunami can be exponentially higher than a storm.  Super Typhoon Haiyna, one of the largest storm in recorded history, killed 5,260.  The Tohoku Japan Tsunami of 2011 killed 15,887 and the the Indian ocean Tsunami killed over 250,000 in several countries.

Beauty Pageants Philippines Preparation

beauty pageants Philippines

Beauty Pageants Philippines Preparation I attended a Miss Teen Barangay Pageant 2014 (age range 13-19 years old) held in one tiny area in Cebu.  10 years ago, the preparation didn’t include serious rehearsals months before the beauty pageant. The girls would be oriented a day or a week before the event and that was it. The gowns were not extremely stunning, elegant and eye catching. Beauty pageant preparationBut now, 2014… well, the pageant has evolved.  The talent is exponentially more complex and diverse.  For example, 10 years ago there was just a “dance” category, but now the competition is open to many sub-categories of dance such as tango, hip hop, belly dance and more. Before, singing with a powerful R&B voice like Whitney or Celine Dion was the only way to get recognition. Now other genre are appreciated such as acoustic, jazz etc. Ever wonder why Philippines beauty queen representatives keep winning back to back international pageants?  Lets analyze and elaborate.

What are the preparations made before the pageant?

1. Production rehearsalsbeauty pageants 6 “Practice makes perfect” so rehearsal is taken seriously from songs to the dance steps. The girls have repeated their performances and practiced a month before the event.  The organizers ensure that everyone has memorize the dance routine and properly project themselves as real beauty queens.

2. Introduction number

“First impressions are lasting impressions.” The intro must be very well presented by the contestant by introducing their place of origin.  Their entry are always going to leave a lasting impression on the rest of the performance. introduction number of Miss Universe Philippines 2013

3. Casual Wear – “Looking good is the best revenge.” — Ivana Trump.  One of the categories in the Miss Teen competition is “casual wear” which means business attire (pants suites and business skirts).  In the Miss Teen pageant, it went way beyond “casual clothes”.  It is very elegant, fancy, casual wear that projects an image of both beauty and brains. beauty pageants Philippines

4. Talentbeauty pageants 4“Your talent is God given, what you do with it is your gift back to God” — Leo Buscaglia.  The talents presented are now more diverse.  They range from different song genre, belly dancing, Hawaiian dance and  hiphop. An exotic fire dancing which you used to see in a circus only are now performed by a future beauty queen. Beatbox Talent of Miss World Philippines 2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za_kP1yD3Jo

5. Gownbeauty pageants 4 (2) Stunning evening gown is one big part of winning the crown. Since there are many contestants, having a glamorous and very eye catching gown gives you a chance to be one step ahead of the others. It is also important to show off your femininity and be the very definition of a ‘woman’. “Your dresses should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to show you’re a lady.” — Edith Head.

6. Fun wear -“I stay true to myself and my style, and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original.” — Aaliyah.

7. A Beauty Queen hair and make up -The overall beauty of the contestants includes a good hairdo and perfect make up. It is one of the most important aspects of getting the crown and it is a criteria for the judges. Beauty pageant contestants always have a back up make up artist and PA’s (personal assistants) to have their make up retouch and to help them dressing up.

8. Swimwear – Next to the gown, and performance of the contestant, swimwear is the most anticipated part of any beauty pageant.  This category is merciless accepting nothing less than perfection.

We have been taking a closer look at the status of filipinos working in the middle east.  Here is the latest news in what seems like an endless stream of tragedy events for pinoys in that part of the world.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is hoping to save the life of  trying to save the life of a Filipino on death row in Qatar charged with espionage.

Last year, April 11, a filipino citizen was put to death for the same charge.  Two others working as technicians at a Qatari military base were given life in prison for the same offense.

The Foreign Affairs Department says, their relatives have been informed and the Philippine Embassy in Qatar is already extending legal assistance to the three Filipinos. ANC World Tonight, May 24, 2014

Filipino Woman Burned by Saudi Employer

23 year old Fatima had boiling water poured on her after two months of being in Riyadh.  The picture you see here was posted on Facebook and ignited a lot of attention from other filipinos online.  After the Saudi woman through the boiling water on her, it took them 6 hours to take her to the hospital.

Fatima was beaten up within five days of her arrival by her male employer and was sometimes deprived of food.

I was in Kuwait from 2012 – 2013, I highly discourage ANY and ALL filipinas to go to the middle east.  If you have another alternative, then take it.  There are a lot of things like this that happen to asian women in the middle east that is not reported, ignored or hidden from the public.  When I was in the country, I heard of rapes, blackmail, slavery and blatant exploitation of filipinas from filipinas that had been there.

I will be honest and say, this does NOT happen to all or even most filipinas in the middle east, but its a LOT.  Its just not a safe place for filipino women.  Not safe for women at all.

While I do not think that Islam teaches people to do such things, I do believe that there are some followers of the faith that set a poor example of how muslims should
