Why Filipinos Are So Happy (VLOG31) (Yuri in the Philippines 5)

why are filipinos happy

Yuri has lived in a developing country (Philippines) and a developed country (America).  She has noticed that people in richer countries can afford to take a lot of their opportunities for granted.  While people in developing countries have to worry about survival.  When survival is at stake, you realize each day you are alive is a blessing.

Culture of Philippines Visiting Home (VLOG26)

no thumb

When visiting family in the Philippines it is part of the tradition to bring back gifts. The culture of the Philippines is focused on family. This is hard for some people from the west to understand, but the more you can grasp this, the more you will understand Filipino culture. It can be a challenge because it can be expensive.

Yuri talks about how it is a little different in the Philippines from 2 years ago. It is a little more expensive. She sent a balikbayan box but its not there yet.

Yuri went back to her sisters house and has been staying busy spending time with family while doing videos.

Message to Yuri #1: Inspired by Daniel Cabrera

daniel-cabrera-work-harder-no-excuses

Hello Yuri,

I hope you are doing fine. I am doing ok. But I felt really depressed when you first left. I stayed in bed and did not want to get up. Then I remembered the story of Daniel Cabrera.

In 2015 a medical student, Joyce Torrefranca, saw a homeless kid doing something strange. He was studying at night by the light of a McDonald’s. She took a picture of him and posted it on Facebook. It went viral. https://www.facebook.com/joyce.torrefranca/posts/1010235928995791

Traveling to the philippines – How to get a cheap flight

traveling-to-the-philippines
Can you make a video on how to find the cheapest plane tickets to the Philippines? How much is the average price?
My recent ticket cost about $960 from Colorado to Cebu (with very little layovers).  I found a flight directly to Cebu.  There are few great sites I use to find flights:
  • Expedia
  • Orbitz
  • OneTravel
Make sure you book the ticket waaaay ahead of time (4-5 months).  The flight will be more expensive if you go during peak seasons (Nov December).  Look for reviews on airlines.  Its really important.  Look for packages that might save you money.

Advice from another subscriber:
i have paid as much as $1200 Korean and low as $840 on ANA. It all depends where you are traveling from. I’m traveling from Wash. DC to Manila. Also you can get cheaper prices if you don’t mind making more than one stop. Different airlines have different customer service which can make all the difference for a long flight. Personally I love Korean airlines and I would use them always if i could. Their prices tend to be on the higher end but sometimes you can get a deal. I have a Korean airlines travel agency in a local Asian store near my house and they often run specials during certain months of the year.

Philippines Retirement

philippines-retirement-time-deposit-account

If you are planning to retire in the Philippines you may want to consider getting an account at a local bank there. But what bank should you use?

Did you know that some rural banks have been closed down resulting in potential loss of money?

Yuri researched the top banks before she started saving. These banks are:
BDO, BPI, and Metrobank. Over the years, these banks have remained secure.

Philippines Retirement : Medical Care Solution II

retire in philippines medical care solution

There are some medical care solutions for you if you decide to retire in the Philippines.

We respond to some of the comments we received from the previous video on medical care in the Philippines and we repeat some suggestions for expats seeking to stay:

1. Always have cash. Make sure you money is accessible
2. Do not go to public hospitals

Some insurance plans may cover some emergency medical care overseas such as Mutual of Omaha – Medicare Supplement Plan G.

A site called pacificcross.com.ph may have some solutions for you. You can also check out PRA.gov.ph.

Philippines Retirement : Medical Care and my experience

philippines-retirement

If you have a serious medical problem in the Philippines and you have no money then there is a good chance you are just going to suffer or die.

Although there is a law that makes medical facilities care for all even if they don’t have money, this does not usually happen.

I know this because this is how my mother died.
