Filipina Health Breast Cancer

According to Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO),  3 out of 100 filipino women are expected to get breast cancer in her life-time.  This is the highest in 13 asian countries.   Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among asian women in the United States.  In the US, filipino women are most likely to die since they do less preventative maintenance.  They do less mammograms and check ups than other Asian American women.

The Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training (AANCART) worked with the American Cancer Society Hawai‘i-Pacific Corporation (ACS) to work together to inform filipino women of the risks.  AANCART also worked with Hawai‘i Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) to inform filipino women of there risks to cervical cancers and not treating it in time.  They also helped enroll women in treatment programs.

Lack of health insurance and lack of regular health check ups makes filipinas more at risk for not only cancer, but also high cholesterol and heart problems.  All women should get a checkup especially for breast cancer at age 35 and again at 40.

According to Hawai‘i Cancer Facts and Figures 2003–2004 the statistics among Asian women in getting seen for cancer at the late stage was 34.9% of Filipino women compared to 29% of Chinese women and 22.4% of Japanese women.

In the Philippines breast cancer is now the most prevalent form of cancer (beating lung cancer).  Breast cancer is the third leading cause of death in Philippines.

In order to reduce the risks of breast cancer in the Philippines the Asian Hospital and Medical Center’s Breast Center (AHMC) was built in Manila as a one stop shop for breast cancer treatment.
